CORONARY HEART DISEASE CLINIC

Did you know that...

Heart and circulatory disease is the UK's biggest killer.
Death rates from coronary heart disease in the UK are among
the highest in the world.
Almost twice as many women die from heart and circulatory
disease as they do from cancer.
Over 1.5 million people in the UK have angina, half a million
have heart failure and these numbers are rising.
Someone has a heart attack every two minutes.
The British Heart Foundation is the largest source
of funds for independent heart research in this country.

Heart disease and heart attacks are common- but they're not inevitable. There is action you can take to reduce your risk of developing heart disease.

We are fully committed to act in order to prevent the disease if you are healthy or to prevent further attacks if you already have the condition.

You might be invited (or you could arrange the appointment yourself if you think you could be at risk) to this clinic because your identified family history, your age group or your own history according to risk factors recorded in your records.

We will check your risk factors as above and will arrange for blood tests in order to estimate your level of cholesterol and other lipids (fat) in your blood. We will inquire about your family history.  With all that information we calculate an approximate likelihood for you to develop angina or a heart attack within 10 years (called 10 years Framingham Risk Factor). Remember that the risk is only approximate and based in the best research available at the time. In any case, EARLY INTERVENTION is likely to alter the course and will reduce the chances of developing CHD.

You will be given advised according to your personal circumstances and/or will be referred to one of the doctors for active intervention which might include starting some medication.
